A new “Hispano” arrived in Tulsa

As the new year began in Tulsa, thousands of readers picked up the traditional Hispano de Tulsa newspaper, but they found it had a new format: a bilingual publication.

Minority newspapers try to ease homesickness and at the same time promote integration. As reporters, businessmen and immigrant associations suggest, the first thing new immigrants need upon arriving to a foreign country is to reaffirm their identity and maintain ties with their roots and their past; then they can begin to incorporate themselves into their new world.

“I didn’t know that it was the Hispano; I thought it was another newspaper,” said Marcos Rubalcaba, a student in Tulsa’s Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology. “It’s a good change.”

The new Hispano de Tulsa is no longer a newspaper for immigrants passing through, but a multicultural link.
