Social Scholarship Challenge Voting has begun

Submissions and votes take place via social media. Winners receive one-year tuition, iPad. The person whose big idea receives the most online votes will earn a 2010-11 scholarship to Oklahoma Wesleyan University.   The Bartlesville-based university with satellite campuses in Tulsa and Oklahoma City announced its first social scholarship challenge Feb.

Native Tulsans and Actors Recognized at Annual Legacy Dinner Actor and Tulsa native Tim Blake Nelson will be honored by the Greenwood Cultural Center at its sixth annual Legacy Award Dinner on April 15. He has been featured in more 35 films but is best known for his role in the film O Brother, Where Art Thou? He also directed the film O based on William Shakespeare’s Othello. Nelson has also written a number of works for both the stage and screen. Another Tulsa native, Academy Award nominee Alfre Woodard, will be honorary chair of the dinner.

He will address the March 2 Tulsa Public Schools bond issue election. The public will be asked to approve a $354 million bond issue to continue work on the improvement of schools throughout the district.

TPS Bond Issue Slated for Vote March 2 - Yes Vote Means No New Taxes

Tulsa, OK -- Tulsans will have the opportunity to vote March 2 on the 2010 Tulsa Public Schools Bond Issue, a comprehensive $354 million bond proposal that will not raise taxes. "It is a proven fact that better schools have a direct impact on the quality of life of a city and lead to better neighborhoods, so this bond issue benefits everyone who calls Tulsa home," said Dr. Keith Ballard, TPS superintendent. Tulsa's WNBA franchise unveils its name.

                                         After months of anticipation, the new WNBA Tulsa franchise officially unveiled its identity today with the announcement of the new team name, logo and colors. The new franchise will be named the Tulsa Shock and its colors black, red and gold. The logo features a basketball on top of “Tulsa Shock” with a lightning bolt through it.   The “Tulsa” lettering has an Art Deco inspiration which was influenced by the city’s rich history in Art Deco architecture.

WNBA Tulsa Investors Vote to Request Franchise from the League

Tulsa Pro Hoops LLC, the group that is attempting to bring a WNBA franchise to Tulsa, has given notice to the league of its desire to exercise its option to purchase a membership in the WNBA. “The company has hits its benchmarks and elected to exercise its option and officially file its application,” said Bill Cameron, the company’s lead investor, chairman and chief executive officer. A decision from the WNBA is expected by the end of the month. In addition, Scott and Katie Schofield have pledged their support for bringing a WNBA franchise to Tulsa by becoming the latest investors to commit to securing a team.

Oral Roberts University Sees Increase in Enrollment for Fall 2009

Oral Roberts University announced today that the school’s fall 2009 undergraduate and graduate enrollment is up by 73 students from the fall of 2008. The total enrollment for fall 2009 is 3,140 students, representing 49 states and 56 countries. The tenth annual Oklahomans Without Limits (OWL) Summer Camp starts today. TCC Gives First Look at Air Traffic Control Program and Training Facility

Every day more than 50,000 aircrafts are guided safely through the national airspace system. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has selected Tulsa Community College to train future control tower personnel with a new air traffic control degree program. Members of the Tulsa aviation community and local media gathered Thursday to learn more about the FAA’s selection of TCC to participate in the Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative (CTI) program. TCC is only the second institution in Oklahoma to offer the training.

Going against the tide of negative news, the Oklahoma Business Ethics Consortium (Ok Ethics) is seeking to honor local companies for doing the right thing. The non-profit group of nearly 700 business leaders and professionals is currently seeking nominations its annual Compass Awards, a program that recognizes Oklahoma companies for actively promoting ethics at work.       “So often we see what is wrong in the world; to balance that, we need inspiration from those who achieve success through honorable business practices. ” says Mike Strong, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Quality Award Foundation and Chairperson for the OK Ethics Compass Award Judging Panel.

Tulsa Transit general manger is transit person of the year

Bill Cartwright, general manager of the Metropolitan Tulsa Transit Authority, has been named the 2008 Oklahoma Public Transit Professional of the Year by the Oklahoma Transit Association.     The announcement took place during the 11th Annual OTA ‘Awards for Excellence’ banquet at the Crowne Plaza Hotel here.     Cartwright accepted the award from Theta Dempsey of CART, the University of Oklahoma and Norman transit service, who is the OTA president. He was introduced by Rick Cain, director of the Oklahoma City transit system, who was the 2007 recipient.

Vintage Sooner Football Pride Song Released As Novelty Gift

Tipping its hat to the dominant legacy of Sooner football, the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame has released Oklahoma country music artist Max Boydstun’s rendition of the classic song, “OU -- It’s Hard to be Humble, Take No Prisoners!” as a CD single to be sold as a novelty fundraiser.   The song, written by Roger Foster and originally released in 1981, offers a humorous and semi-politically incorrect look at an earlier era of OU football.   “Things were a little different in the 80s,” Boydstun said.   “True Sooner fans will appreciate the honesty and tongue-in-cheek humor of the song, and veteran fans can challenge younger fans to recognize the names of some of the Sooner greats mentioned in the lyrics.

OPEA Files Suit Against Former Employee & Recently Formed Oklahoma Corrections Professionals Association

The Oklahoma Public Employees Association (OPEA) has filed a lawsuit in Cleveland County district court alleging that Cleveland County resident, Dean Balmer, a former OPEA employee, breached code of ethics and confidentiality policies that prohibited the use, dissemination and retention of OPEA’s proprietary membership information. OPEA also alleges that federal and state copyright infringement occurred, claiming information was wrongfully obtained and utilized to solicit OPEA members in an effort to create Oklahoma Corrections Professionals (OCP) - a new association in direct competition for OPEA’s current state corrections employees’ membership. "Our purpose at OPEA is to represent the rights of our members,” said Sterling Zearley, OPEA Executive Director. “Part of that duty as an Association includes protecting our membership's confidential information.
