Black journalists group to sponsor seminars on media

The Tulsa chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists will hold a two-part "Meet the Press Day" on Friday.

The morning session is free for college students interested in journalism, online media, social networking and the web.

Registration for the morning session begins at 9 a.m. with media sessions until noon. That session will be held at Langston University-Tulsa, 914 N. Greenwood Ave.

Lyndsay Levingston of Fox 23; Carlos Moreno of Performance Magazine; and Melissa Kennedy of aliveonlinemag.com will be the facilitators.

The afternoon session will be in Tulsa Community College's Metro Campus commons area, 909 S. Boston Ave.

Registration for the afternoon workshop begins at 1 p.m., and the media sessions will be from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The afternoon event will feature corporate and media professionals from the Tulsa Press Club and National Association of Black Journalists-Tulsa chapter.

Session leaders and panelists will include Russ Florence, president and chief operating officer of Schnake Turnbo & Frank public relations firm; Jerry Goodwin, assistant professor of journalism and mass communications and faculty adviser to The TCC Connection; Russell LaCour and Deon Hampton of the Tulsa World; Carmen Pettie of MeWe Consulting; and Levingston.

Panel discussions and breakout sessions will include "How to Get in the News Without Committing a Crime"; "Corporate Trends in Fundraising"; "Public Relations
and Imaging"; "Rules for Public Service Announcements"; and "Getting the Press Conference."

The program is free for high school and college students. Individual registration for the afternoon session costs $30. Nonprofit groups and community organizations can attend for $25.

Proceeds from the event will assist in funding high school and college journalism programs.
